Cineinthecity 05/10/2021 World-class acting all around See more Graham B. @gbake13 Mar 22 Absolute master piece watched it in theaters it was surprisingly funny one of the best movies I have ever seen 5/5 See more Ola G @Ollie1972 Jan 13 Mike Nichols directorial debut from 1966 of the Edward Albee's play of the same name is a drama of the highest quality with outstanding performances specifically from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as Martha and George. The direction and cinematography from Nichols and Haskell Wexler adds so much to the film and the decision of shooting it in black-and-white adds as well to the dysfunctional and difficult storyline. I found the film harsh to watch as Martha's and George´s spiral into this alcoholic madness is extremely convincing. Maybe not so strange as the real life marriage between Taylor and Burton was of the dramatic kind. And I also felt it was harsh to watch the iconic and gorgeous Taylor (a favourite actress of mine) as a nasty, spiteful, cynical raging drunk. Which on the other hand shows her incredible range as an actress. "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?" is a complex, difficult and great film. But when the opportunity arose to play Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," Liz FOUGHT for the role. It was a real change of pace for her, she gave it her all, and she RICHLY deserved the Oscar she got for it. I watch this movie last night on Kanopy, for only the second time in maybe ten years, and it was just as emotionally exhausting as it was the first time I saw it.
