Full of ego and ambition, Blackwolf claims his mother's throne, assembles an army and sets out to brainwash and conquer Earth. Critics Consensus

Its central metaphor is a bit too on the nose, but Wizards is an otherwise psychedelic, freaky trip into an alternate version of our world.

Ralph Bakshi's animated sword-and-sorcery tale is a long way from his best work, marred by cut-rate techniques and a shapeless screenplay. Go to Full Review A.H. Weiler New York Times May 9, 2005
3/5
Mr. Bakshi's allegory is fairly obvious from the outset, but he and his animators are convincingly professional. They have devised a melange of animation and live footage that gives their feature mystical, slightly scary and, occasionally, comic tones. Produced on a limited budget at a time when animated features were still considered kid stuff, it plays like a PG version of an underground comic book made for the big screen. Go to Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) Oct 3, 2022

What is at least galavanising and shocking in the context of Bakshi's earlier films seems more like an out-of-control tic here. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Robert P @Superbad Sep 4, 2026 Wizards = a *3 and 1/2 star* movie! See more Stephen C @scoll1984 Jul 14, 2026 It’s really bad. The animation is cheap (many long, static shots…they were obviously running out of money), the voice work is horrendous (in one instance even leaving in a flubbed line that the voice actor started over), and the story is convoluted (suddenly the mutants are Nazis?) I can only imagine that someone might enjoy it if they saw it as a child and have that nostalgia for it. But if you’re like me, just curious about it because you saw something on YouTube…don’t waste your time. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Mar 5, 2026 Most people watch this movie because they want to know what it's all about. Let me tell you it's not what I thought it was gonna be-- and for me, that was bad. I simply didn't like it. It was boring and confusing. If it was something else, I probably would have liked it. Love the cover, but it's kind of random. It's this movie and Fritz the Cat that are Bakshi's most famous films. See more Valerie D @CookieFairie Nov 13, 2025 One of my all-time favorites! Unique, a little bloody, a good laugh here and there, and I love the 'horses'. See more Dan N @RT01421062 Aug 16, 2024 I first saw Wizards when less than 10 years old. Seen it dozens of times since then and the animation, the drawing is incredible. Disney would have never made it. I loved it and still do 46 years later. Just watch it!!
