Charles 08/31/2022 Classic Bond film with a great performance from Sean Connery See more Chris S @Janomi Jul 22 You Only Live Twice has its moments, especially when it leans into pure Bond spectacle. The hidden volcano base is the movie’s biggest strength and one of the most iconic sets in the franchise. The rocket, control room, monorail, army of henchmen, and massive final assault push the series into full blockbuster territory. Sean Connery may not seem as engaged as he did in the best earlier entries, but he still brings the cool confidence, dry humor, and physical authority that defined his Bond. The movie around him is bigger than ever, even if his performance has less spark than Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. The story is more fantasy spectacle than tight spy thriller, with stolen spacecraft and global manipulation replacing grounded espionage. The weakest element is the "Bond becomes Japanese" subplot, which is awkward, unconvincing, and culturally uncomfortable. There is plenty to like, but this is more memorable for its scale than its storytelling. Akiko Wakabayashi was very great as Aki, but her death wasn't really supposed to be there. She was badly replaced by Kissy Suzuki, which is somehow the main Bond girl of the movie. Donald Pleasance was great as Blofeld, but I expected more from him as he only appears in the final act. It leans heavily into the larger-than-life spy fantasy style that the series is known for, with some of the most memorable set pieces and visuals from the early Bond era. Sean Connery still carries the role of Bond with confidence and charm, even when the story becomes a bit over-the-top. The introduction of Blofeld’s volcano lair is iconic and adds a strong sense of scale and spectacle that helps define the film’s identity. The atmosphere, gadgets, and Cold War spy tone all work in its favor, even if the plot can feel a bit loose at times. While it’s not the most tightly written Bond film, it remains highly watchable and fun in a classic spy adventure way. Overall, i'd gave it a 7/10.
