See more Chris S @Janomi Jul 6 Zero Dark Thirty is a very strong procedural thriller, shaped by Kathryn Bigelow’s cold, controlled direction. She avoids turning the hunt for Bin Laden into a simple revenge story and instead gives the film the patience of an investigation and the pressure of a thriller. Jessica Chastain gives the movie its intensity as Maya. She is obsessive, disciplined, isolated, and increasingly consumed by the mission, and Chastain makes that determination feel both powerful and unsettling. The film is also excellent at showing the slow intelligence process: dead ends, interrogations, bureaucracy, analysis, mistakes, and persistence. The Abbottabad raid is brilliantly staged, quiet, tactical, and gripping without becoming flashy. The main weakness is that the same realism and restraint can make parts of the film feel dry and clinical. Maya is compelling, but emotionally distant. I think this is one of the best movies ever made. It doesn't insult your intelligence with Hollywoody drek. It is horrifying, it is realistic, it is difficult, it assumes you are intelligent enough to understand and follow what is happening. It is emotionally wrenching. It is also technically extremely well done, very tight, incredible acting, incredible photography, almost every shot, especially at the end, is a masterpiece. Try to imagine what it actually took to make this movie. So much of it is so realistic it almost seems like a documentary. One forgets this is a movie and that every single person in it is an actor. Try to imagine yourself in the the shoes of any of the main characters-- what would it take to be those people. This is really a masterwork of a movie. See more Read all reviews
