Par H @Parhwy 6d Queen City Rocker (1986) is an 85-minute-long New Zealand film I saw on Prime in March 2026. Our main character is Ska (aka Matthew) and his mates and family in Auckland. Ska and his mates are low level crims. I think the director wants me to be sympathetic to Ska; not ‘accept his world view and ignore his flaws", more "watch and understand without judgement. I found that hard. I was a teen in this exact milieu in the 1980s (in Australia) and people like Ska and his mates were awful (yep, we had them here too). The audio for this film is awkward in that sometimes the music (with singing) is set at the same volume as dialogue. Ska sees problems and makes them worse. Is it cathartic for the viewer? For me, no. The sub-plot with his sister is resolved with maximum violence and minimal psychology. He gets away with stupid acts and drives off into the sunrise with the girl. Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 3/10. See more Read all reviews
