Simon T @Bucksplit 1d Classic Mike Leigh territory - this time we follow three unhappy postmen whose wives have either left them, betray them or simply loathe them. Eric Richard is the main focus, living alone with his Sinatra records and monosyllabically screwing the wives of the other two (Timothy Spall, making his debut in a Mike Leigh film, and Tim Barker), while ignoring his 14 year-old daughter and the patronising social worker. Everyone smokes (Richard in every scene) and the only weakness is an overextended finale when a new social worker is allowed a self-consciously caricatured monologue. Carl Davis' string music is a marvellous accompaniment to the serio-comic goings on. See more Read all reviews
