Long-troubled by a catastrophic event for which he shares some of the blame, Soviet submarine Capt. Demi (Ed Harris), nevertheless, agrees to lead one final mission aboard the B-67, a vessel which is soon to be sold to the Chinese navy. Demi's compromised mental state leaves him ill-prepared to deal with the situation posed by a technician (David Duchovny) who -- acting on top-secret orders -- seizes control of the sub. His orders: Start World War III and shift the blame to the Chinese.

Done well, submarine movies are intense affairs that keep viewers glued to the screen as characters play breathtaking games of cat-and-mouse. Done poorly, they turn out like Phantom.

One movie where the critics and audience ratings do not match my own. The only difficulty was knowing the good guys from the bad. Plus some of them switched sides so I lost track 🤨

Great actors who can't stop it from sinking into the abyss. I'm a huge fan of historical accuracy so I applaud the attention to detail on the costumes, the sets, the cinematography etc. They put in a LOT of effort to get the look and feel just right....but then left the American actors all using their own American accents - which was incredibly jarring. It'd be akin to having a modern car in a western - really broke the immersion. Unfortunately I also just couldn't understand some parts - like the motivations of the antagonist. You don't really *care* why he's doing what he's doing, and that's a massive opportunity missed. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Probably won't remember it in 3 weeks.

This is an under-rated little gem that's not far off from Hunt for Red October. Solid performances from the cast and some real tension (and casualties)

There are many great films about submarines: Das Boot, Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red October. This... is not one of them. Nice cast. An unorthodox ending (to say the least). But this low budget drama never rises to the heights of those great films. Merely watchable.
