The hair-raising narrative content notwithstanding, the movie doesn’t create much emotional traction. Go to Full Review

It doesn't forge a sustained connection with the viewer nor does it take risks in its perspective, but it offers a clear and accessible account of a key period in Italian history. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The Big Fake is more period fashion show than intriguing drama. Go to Full Review

It plays a song we have heard too many times. It doesn’t give us enough of a reason to go down this familiar path one more time. Go to Full Review

It had the potential to be one of the most jaw-dropping cautionary tales of all time. Now, it’s going to be chewed up and spit out by the Netflix algorithm into the streaming platform’s ever-growing pit of forgettable films. Go to Full Review

The big issue with Netflix’s so-so Italian forgery thriller The Big Fake is that its protagonist, Pietro Castellitto’s Toni, simply can’t wait to get in over his head. Go to Full Review

Andrea F @AndreaFrancolini 1d Can’t say how this film can be rendered in English and still keep his fashion. Anyhow in Italian is absolutely amazing. See more Pierre B @Pierre_1 1d Residing near Marseille at that time, I lived that event. I even had problems with police as a Canadian sailing into Saint-Tropez from Sardinia shortly after Easter. The movie captures very well the atmosphere in Italie in that era, and the decadence during those years. The tension in Europe and the mess in Italy after the abduction of Aldo Moro had everyone on pins and needles. The forger is only a vehicle to explorence the Italian society of those years: shallowness, idealism, and corruption at all levels of the Italian society. Those are well depicted. What is missing is the limited emotional layers presented through the key protagonist. Maybe that was the purpose in order to concentrate on the overall story. To this day, the Aldo Moro abduction has not been properly resolved, fully explaining the role of the state in his murder. This is a historical piece not an action movie. See more Vince G @Cenzo49 2d Interesting interpretation of historical events. Mostly true, but the fictional twist makes it compelling. See more gungi @WhatWhere 4d I was quite intrigued by this recent release as it tackles a topic that is rather unexplored in movies. Unfortunately, while the film treats the issue of fakery as an important point on which the plot pivots, it remains on a surface level and doesn't go much deeper. Antonio's motivation to forge derives from his ability to do so and subsequently make wealth. While the film touches on relevant themes that are attached to forgeries it leaves those topics unexplored to a great extent: the film begins at the end, meaning its being told already, and thus follows the forger's logic of being haunted by the original that has been done already; the likelihood of an unreliable narrator that the movie insists upon in the beginning; or the forger's image as a good "player" (whether in billiard, art, women) who uses his hand effectively. In particular, the psychology of the forger after the injury to his hand could have been an engaging angle, but the film only brushes over it lightly. See more len l @MovieBuff3591 4d It was period piece that embodied love, betrayal, political corruption and Vatican connections. The backdrop was the strength and weaknesses of two brothers and a priest, childhood friends until the very end. It captures your interest from beginning to end. One of the best films I have seen in a long time. See more Roberto j @RobbyDigital 6d This movie was amazing. I don’t understand all the hate, maybe it’s too much culture for Americans to comprehend but it’s a great movie and I enjoyed it thoroughly. See more Read all reviews
