Esther N @Invisigoth 20h This is one of the best documentaries I've seen, both revealing and touching. Mel Brooks, with all odds against him, rose to fame by shining a light on bigotry, mysoginy, and government corruption with humor and intelligence. His movies never spoke down to anyone and, while controversial to some, pulls back the curtain on current events. Season 1 begins with Brooks' early life growing up in a Jewish community and his connection to the Catskills Borscht Belt. He worked with some of the best and brightest in the business but faced challenges in getting noticed until Carl Reiner recorded the 2000 Year-Old Man with him. It wasn't the breakthrough he needed but put him on the map. Season 1 takes through his earliest works with Your Show of Shows up to The Producers and Blazing Saddles. Great interviews including his sons, Gene Wilder, and Rob Reiner :'( It's a must see for any fan of Brooks, his movies, and the comedians he inspired. And the insights and tributes are touching. Particularly from Rob Reiner. It is just a bit slow and meandering at times. I was surprised to learn he was a difficult person to his family. I still love him dearly. He does owe a good but of his lasting fame to Gene Wilder and Madeline Kahn. Brooks' works are great nonetheless. American trasures.
