What to Know

Critics Consensus

Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.

The sets are brighter, the dialogue is sharper, with more expletives than expected from the elders as well as the kids, and the character development is strong across the board. Go to Full Review

“Starfleet Academy” is not a particularly serious story... When the show wants to be funny, though, it is. Go to Full Review

A promising collection of characters and storylines just setting the table for future achievement, not quite ready to prove its value beyond the legends of Kirk and Spock. Go to Full Review

Are the costumes and aliens sometimes way ridiculous? Absolutely. Does it have enough heart to sustain us another 50 years? You know it does. I loved this show. I had so much fun watching it. Go to Full Review

The incredibly diverse, multi-species nature of the interplanetary characters seems right in step with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s original vision for the series. Go to Full Review

Bob R @RipTorn 12h If you love classic Star Trek — TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise — you might want to pretend this doesn’t exist. The writing is poor, the characters are flat, and the creators clearly missed the memo on what made Star Trek thoughtful, hopeful, or smart. It’s less ‘boldly go’ and more ‘barely tried.’ Basically a shallow sci-fi drama wearing Star Trek like a Halloween costume. Hard pass. See more Ken D @kldue 13h So terrible as to be completely unwatchable. This is NOT Star Trek. Don't waste your time. Painful to see what they did with a huge budget. See more David G 15h Some shows are worth sticking with. Starfleet Academy is inconsistent, and has taken a while to find its feet, but the characters grown on you, and the show is hitting some rewarding emotional notes. See more Murtaza R. @DonYak 15h I love this show! The production and the writing is really well done. The characters are amazing. This is a great new entry in the Star Trek franchise! See more Brian P @BGPhilbin 17h I'm not your typical Trekker/Trekkie. I didn't like Star Trek as a kid & didn't appreciate it until I was well and fully an adult in 1986. This is a fresh look. I expect that Paramount is going to stick with this 930 years in the future approach, though it's not my personal favorite. I wasn't a big fan of Discovery (except its exceptional Season 2, which led us to Strange New Worlds). Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti are standouts, certainly, with Gina Yashere and Robert Picardo elegantly portraying their supporting characters, as well. The younger cast needs some time in the saddle - while their performances are quite good, they don't seem nearly as on-level as the more experienced cast. Writing is quite good, seeing as this is an entirely new era in which to operate and Discovery didn't really do it much justice. This is a solid approach to the "New Era". Episode Four has really brought the core approach home and I'm very much looking forward to Episode Five. Ad Astra Per Aspera! See more Alex P @prettigoodman 18h Unwatchable. I tried, i really tried. After 5+ attempts I could not get past the first 10 minutes. I don't think the showrunners understand or care about the audience. I was hoping to watch something while I follow ice around but this is not it. See more Read all reviews
