Its Western influences -- The Evil Dead, A Nightmare on Elm Street -- are obvious, but its ingenuity and effervescent humour are all its own. Go to Full Review

DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 12h You do have to admire Tsui Hark for even daring to attempt creating an animated reinterpretation of one of Hong Kong cinema's most beloved supernatural romances. Rather than trying to outdo the iconic 1987 live-action film, this fascinating, if often overlooked, animated version reimagines the story through stylised visuals and heightened emotional clarity. It's as frenetic as any Tsui Hark production, with the animation embracing a storybook aesthetic. The world feels dreamlike, perfectly suited to a tale about love that exists between life and death. Ultimately, standing as a complementary companion to its live-action predecessor rather than a replacement, this animated Chinese Ghost Story trades iconic performances and kinetic action for visual poetry and emotional restraint. It's not perfect by any means, but it's a considerable accomplishment and just so irresistibly charming that, for any fan of the original, it's worth watching. See more 09/25/2017 The one by real people was far better. See more 12/19/2012 An entertaining and often fascinating fantasy combining Chinese and Buddhist mythology with traditional Eastern folktales in which a wandering hero falls in love with a beautiful woman only to discover she is a ghost. A delightful film by a talented ensemble of Chinese and Japanese animators. Two material thumbs up! See more 04/13/2011 It's just like Spirited Away! Only minus the beautiful animation and a cohesive storyline. So it's like Spirited Away if it were made by a third rate chinese sweatshop/animation studio.
