From his hideout beneath a 19th century Paris opera house, the brooding Phantom schemes to get closer to vocalist Christine Daae. The Phantom, wearing a mask to hide a congenital disfigurement, strong-arms management into giving the budding starlet key roles, but Christine instead falls for arts benefactor Raoul. Terrified at the notion of her absence, the Phantom enacts a plan to keep Christine by his side, while Raoul tries to foil the scheme.

Highly watchable despite the bloated runtime and surprising lack of character development. Driver is a gem as a diva and Rossum makes a strong impression, but Butler's "sexy" Phantom sinks the whole enterprise. Plus: he can't sing!

The critics giving this a rotten rating are no fun. This movie is spectacular, Gerald Butler is intoxicating. Emmy Rossum is an angel on earth. The music is gorgeous. What more could you want?

I do not understand the hate. I watched this again yesterday and I loved it! Especially Gerard Butler. The guy’s acting is good, but his singing’s phenomenal! I agree, it’s a little more rock and roll than opera, but apparently that’s what Joel Schumacher and Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted. Joel Schumacher may have directed horrible Batman movies, but here, he nailed it! What I like most about Gerard’s Phantom asides from his voice is the fact that he’s a lot calmer than most other depictions. He’s not as insecure about his deformity, which looks to be an acid burn, and he’s more good-looking than some others. Obviously, nobody can top Michael Crawford, but give Gerard some credit.
