Low-life, immoral and always looking for the main chance. They are both liars, cheaters, impulsive and bad tempered. Lana Turner as Cora, the sexy young siren who sap and drifter Frank Chambers (John Garfield) is immediately attracted to after being given the handyman job at an out-of-town diner by the rather clue-less but likeable owner Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) is the star of this Hitchcock-esque caper who quickly has Chambers wrapped around her little finger. It's the nasty Cora who drives the plan ever forward in killing her middle-aged husband so she can start a new life. She hadn't really planned on starting it with Frank Chambers, a hobo without a penny to his name, but she is inadvertently drawn to Garfield's macho persona like a moth to a flame. This classic film noire crackles with sexual electricity between Turner and Garfield and there are even glimpses (remember, this movie was made in 1946) of some risque moonlight swimming at some secluded cove. Talking of electricity. Cora flutters her eyelashes a few extra times to get Frank to pump around a 1000 volts of electricity into her husband's bathwater one night whilst he's enjoying a good singalong to himself in the tub. The pet cat also gets it as well. Suddenly they're like the lottery winners who don't know what to do with themselves. Cora wants to get rid of Frank, as he's become even more clingy and pathetic, but he won't leave their newly inherited diner for fear Cora will 'shop him' to the police. In the end, the old adage, what goes around always comes around, happens when Cora and Fred are driving back from one of their moon-lit swimming 'malarkies.' Brainless Frank takes his eyes off the road for just that extra second too long and crashes the car, killing Cora instantly. Oh dear. Now what Frank? The DA himself, who always had his suspicions about the mysterious death of the nice owner of the diner, has Frank arrested for the murder of Cora and the murder of nice Nick, dead Cora's dead husband. It's off to the gas chamber for Frank. It's an intriguing film about sex, money and greed. Highly watchable and Lana Turner is magnificent. See more Alain E @AlainE Jun 28 A nice crime melodrama. The two protagonists, the unfaithful young wife and the immoral drifter, take turns in breaking the law. The story development is not entirely justified. In the end moral justice is restored. Lana Turner with her plucked eyebrows and the stiff platinum hair conforms to bygone beauty standards. Includes the sacrifice of a pussycat. Even though a couple of the remakes were of high production quality with high paid actors, I will go with the original. This has to be one of the most sensual, sexy introductions of an actress ever (Lana Turner). The story was so hot and steamy, I’m still wondering how it made it past the Censorship Board in 1946.
