What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not deliver as many straight-up scares as genre fans expect, but Agnes takes a gratifyingly unusual approach to well-worn territory.

For all of its ruffled habits and bleeding eyes, Agnes is far sadder than it is scary (quite, versus not at all), and often sillier than it is sad. Go to Full Review

Reece ambitiously flips the movie into a heart-bending moment that focuses on the life of Mary, the one who needs special care from her superiors. Go to Full Review

While the movie tries to be clever with its dramatic shift in tone and completely new direction, it ends up feeling like two different films connected by the barest of threads. Even worse, neither story gets any kind of satisfying ending. Go to Full Review

Amanda F @RT56254243 1d Not a horror film. Not a suspense film. Not a thriller. Honestly I’m not sure what that was exactly, besides an epic waste of 1.5 hours of my life that I genuinely regret I’ll never reclaim. INCREDIBLY BORING AND FORGETTABLE. There was no continuity in who the main character was from beginning to end. Clearly the writers/director were trying to make a point/statement, but I honestly have no idea what that was. Was the demon a figment of everyone’s imagination? What happened to sister Agnes? Why is the movie even named sister Agnes when it appears to follow Sister Mary’s day to day at menial jobs after the convent, for the most part? What happened to the other priest? The movie left so many questions open ended, which maybe I’d want the answer to, if they were more compelling and if it was a better movie. But all this movie inspired me to do was take the time to write this review to warn others not to waste their time watching it, like I did. See more Grant S @RT73998829 3d Just a horrible pile of vomit!!!! Not a horror film. Why Netflix picked this up blows my mind. See more Clayton H. @mrpopcorn 4d Definitely put the horror in horrible. That doesn’t even make sense, but somehow makes more sense than the movie. I did like Mary, and had some cool shots, but that’s where it ends See more Joshua P @RT88858724 4d If I could give this zero stars I would. I like dumb movies most people hate, this was like two movies mashed together that never concluded anything, horror stopped before it started. I hope the director never finds work again, sooooo bad See more Paul O @pjkeys 5d As a former manager of a grocery store I greatly resent the sleazy stereo type of the store manager. However, the lazy cashiers were spot on. I just wish I would have thought to bribe the high school girls I supervised for later sexual favors, what a genius way to get around any sexual harassment lawsuits! With the manager always in the office, that store must have been a shoplifters' paradise! See more Night C @GorTheGob 5d First of all this is NOT a horror film. Second this is basically two short films tied into one production. The first short film follows a Priest and his trainee on a filler quest by the church to see if a nun in a convent is possessed and if she is exercise the demons. While the acting all around is good there are various story threads that go no where and a lot of moments that are uncomfortable but not in a fun horror way. The second half is where the films has it's better moments but becomes a totally different story about the "possessed" nun's best friend another nun who is told by the "possessed" nun that she should find herself outside of the church and so she does. She gets a job in the city and finds a place to stay but struggles to pay bills. She is constantly fetishized for being a former nun. The former nun's acting may be the best part of the film but the scares are nonexistent and the story is jarringly left open to interpretation. Decent acting but not a good nun horror.
