Critics Consensus

A scrappy coming of age dramedy that pulls off a surprisingly moving tonal sleight of hand, I Like Movies is fiercely unsentimental about cinema nostalgia and all the better for it.

Imagine if Superbad were directed by a woman who didn’t allow the toxic masculinity and misogyny to go unchecked, while also l giving her genuinely funny and moving characters the room for growth and empathy. I Like Movies does that. Go to Full Review

There’s some great acting in this film and the story will resonate with certain groups... I Like Movies has too narrow a focus in terms of it’s story and the cast of characters aren’t diverse or compelling enough to keep me riveted. Go to Full Review

An emotional and unapologetically human film with a challenging protagonist that truly tests its audience. Go to Full Review

Levack carefully plants the seeds of her film’s serious turn throughout, so that when "I Like Movies" steers hard into its coming-of-age rough patch, the tonal shift feels natural. Go to Full Review

Yash B @yashbansal 5d "I Like Movies" is very much a movie made for someone like me. A coming-of-age story that centers around a cinephile is just an interesting premise. I also like this story because it features a dislikable main character who grows and learns as the movie progresses, making for an engaging story arc. I think the movie blends comedy and drama well, but sometimes the tonal shifts are a bit jarring. Still, this is a gem of a movie that I really felt like I needed today. Overall, it is a gift to movie lovers as well as people who grew up in the early 2000s, and I enjoyed it quite a lot and think it stood out within a genre I already love so deeply. See more Ellie S. @ellieyeti Mar 3 Lawrence is intolerable. There is so much nostalgia and relation to this movie (like punch drunk love being a favorite) but how is no one talking about how awful this character is? Not all movie nerds are like this and the friend dynamic is obviously toxic as well. See more David A @Vergazo Feb 20 I am always impressed with a movie like this, that makes it look so simple and easy, to make a good movie. To me, that's the pure uncut, movie "magic". See more Dewey G @Laramine Jan 15 This is a hidden gem. Director Writer Chandlar LeVack has made a cult classic about the movie industry. I would place it in the same category as Hollywood Shuffle for peaking behind the silver screen and looking deeper at the toxic system that has entertained us all for years. Isaiah Lehtinen was spectacular as a twisted little version of the Stanley Kubrick gatekeeper bros that make cinema culture so esoteric and boring. Great movie with lots of laughs and some impressive cinematography. Filled with heart and emotion, the life of a socially inept cinephile hits some lows, but ultimately makes us feel good about ourselves and what we are capable of! See more Read all reviews
