Roman Catholic priest Frank Shore (Ed Harris), who is struggling with his faith, is an investigator in the canonization process of a woman who is said to have performed miracles during -- and after -- her lifetime. Shore interviews the woman's daughter, Roxane (Anne Heche), who tells him of the horrible neglect she suffered from the would-be saint. The priest must reconcile the daughter's stories with others' tales of the woman's worthiness, while also wrestling with his own carnal desires.

Solid examination of faith and doubt. Ed Harris as usually is superb. I thought Anne Heche did a pretty good job as well. As a confirmed atheist, I watched the movie with benign curiosity. So, the benevolent God stopped the bombing of the small town in Eastern Europe but allowed the brutal war that claimed the lives of between 50 to 85 million people to go on and on. We have to assume that only the little girl knew how to pray effectively.

Solid drama about the search for faith through doubt. Harris is always engaging, and while Heche's presence is more than annoying, she plays an outsider character, which helps. Director Agnieska Holland adds several excellent touches to the film, drawing out certain moments and allowing the actors to do their thing without constantly cutting.

Synopsis
